I love the idea of the Loyal Opposition and I hope someone gets it going. I'm only being a little silly when I suggest it be called the "Loyal Opposition League", i.e. LOL

Congress is the first branch of government and it apalls me how it has simply turned into a rubber stamp for the executive branch. This did not start with Trump, but he is venal enough and has enough hubris to take it to the extreme. In a way, it gives us the opening to make a case to the people that Congress should regain its proper place in the checking and balancing of the other two branches.

Thank you for this post. I loved this prasing: "for the specific purpose of supporting cross-partisan, independent-minded, Congress-first candidates". I have been thinking about this type of organizing effort a lot since reading Lee Hamilton's 'Strengthening Congress' and delving into this as part of my writing about a united people-first movement that I think we need right now (https://modernpopulace.org/projects/populist-playbook/#United-Movement). This 'playbook' I wrote links it as part of education on populism, but it's effectively civic-minded, democracy-first pluralism that I advocate for. I'll have a couple posts (https://modernpopulace.substack.com/) about strategies to foster leadership, make elections cheaper, political discourse innovations, and electoral strategies that I think can work toward of a movement to create an independent bloc of representitives in Congress that is akin to what you describe in the Loyal Opposition.
